Lawsuit filed in fatal I-74 school bus vs. semi truck crash

BLOOMINGTON - The wife of the Normal West basketball volunteer Charlie Crabtree, who was killed in a fatal school bus vs. semi truck crashon Interstate 74 in December, is suing the trucking company and estate of the deceased truck driver for damages.
A lawsuit filed in Bloomington shows Kathleen Crabtree is suing Jason Farrell and his Iowa trucking company, Jason Farrell Trucking. Crabtree is also suing the estate of the trucker, Ryan Hute.

Crabtree is suing for damages in excess of $50,000, as well as the cost of the suit.

The lawsuit accuses Hute of failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision and failure to realize he was driving the wrong way on the interstate on Dec. 5 near Downs.
Bloomington lawyer James Ginzkey is representing Crabtree.

Crabtree, who was 72, and Hute, 34, both died in the crash, in which the Normal West junior varsity basketball team was returning from an away game in Champaign. Bus driver Mark Kuhn and assistant coach Steve Price were seriously injured in the crash.
